Our People

Meet: Terry Grill, Sustainability Leader – Americas

At Sealed Air, celebrating our people and their accomplishments is a core part of our culture. In our “Meet: Our People” series, you’ll hear directly from our people across the globe on what it’s like working at SEE, and a little bit about them outside of work.

Where I'm located: Claremont, Calif., U.S.A.

Length of time with SEE: ~17 years.

A typical day for me is: Waking up at 4 a.m. to read newspapers, and ride my bike or practice yoga before starting work around 8 a.m. one of my favorite activities is to plan and prepare for visits to our facilities by state legislators so that they understand the benefits of packaging and the possible consequences of proposed legislation. Once they see that protective packaging decisions are based on the results of testing, they are more likely to amend proposed legislation or to vote in ways that are favorable to our interests. Legislators and their staff are often unaware that our packaging reduces food waste and preserves quality and freshness. I also enjoy compiling and presenting the environmental data from our operations so we can track progress to reaching our goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, water use, energy use and the generation of waste. Additionally, I volunteer as President of the Claremont Wildlands Conservancy, am the Vice Chair of the Catalina Island Conservancy and serve on the board of AMERIPEN the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment.

I decided to come to work at SEE because of: Former SEE Board Member, Charlie Farrell. He was an advisor to my manufacturing company and was also on the board of directors of SEE. He was confident that my background would allow me to be successful in this role. I trusted Charlie and made the leap into the world of sustainability. I also discovered the thoughtful and gracious culture of SEE. I found fellow employees to be quick to say thank you and to praise the efforts of others. I saw that the balance of work and personal time was respected, and I always felt that I could take my own initiative without fear of criticism.

My career path to my current role was: Convoluted. I started at the lab bench as a molecular biologist and worked for American Hospital Supply in sales and management before moving to business development for a biotech start-up. When my father died, I took over as president of a family manufacturing company specializing in customized acoustical and thermal insulation. Once I joined SEE, I learned the emerging field of sustainability by asking questions of others with more experience and collaborating with others both at and outside of SEE. As plastic became the focus of public concern and resulting legislation, I learned to work with lobbyists, trade organizations and other companies to influence legislators in both the state and federal governments.

I helped our SEE Operating Engine by: Communicating my passion for environmental sustainability with everyone I meet. I particularly like providing data about the likely reduction in water and energy use or greenhouse gas emissions for our customers when they switch to using our packaging. I also see how providing timely data about our own operations emissions and for resource use can identify opportunities for improvement that often result in cost savings as well.

The core value that inspires me the most is Integrity because: at SEE, we are careful and have a reputation for basing our claims on data.

If I could have lunch with one person from history, it would be: Madame Marie Curie.  She was the first woman to win the Nobel prize and is quoted as saying, "Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas."
