Cryovac® Food Packaging from Sealed Air Wins Three International Packaging Awards

DUNCAN, S.C. (Jan. 10, 2007) – Sealed Air’s Cryovac® brand has received three of the packaging industry’s most prestigious worldwide honors, WorldStar Awards in the food category. Sealed Air is the only company to win three WorldStar Awards in the same category this year. The Cryovac® Simple Steps™ produce package was recognized for its easy-open, microwaveable design that offers a quick and simple way to cook fresh vegetables. The Compression Pack for Cryovac® Dri-Loc® pads was recognized for its space saving packaging format. The Cryovac® saddle pack-style poultry package was recognized for offering versatile meal preparation and easy storage. These same package designs also were honored with 2006 Top Packaging Awards from the Flexible Packaging Association.

WorldStar received 265 entries from 35 countries around the world. To qualify for a WorldStar Award, a package design must first win a national award. WorldStar entries are judged based on design innovation, protection, economics, performance, marketing and environmental impact.

Cryovac® Simple Steps™ heat-and-serve package for produce is an easy-open microwavable package designed to cook fresh vegetables in approximately two minutes. The vacuum skin format conforms to the contours of the product improving presentation, merchandising appeal, and shelf life. This innovative technology is perfect for fresh vegetables in single and multiple servings and is an ideal package for retail and foodservice.

Replacing corrugated cartons, the Compression Pack is a space-saving packaging format for Cryovac® Dri-Loc® absorbent pads. The cartons have been replaced with printed poly bags overwrapped with a clear poly dust cover, creating a tight, compact bundle that enables more pads to fit in less space for greater efficiency in shipping and warehousing. With an easy-open feature, the Compression Pack for Dri-Loc® pads is easy to use, employs less material, and produces less solid waste weight and volume than conventional corrugated cartons.

The Cryovac® saddle pack-style multi-unit vacuum package for fresh poultry parts offers versatility for meal preparation as well as easy storage. Featuring a unique Cryovac® breathable, rollstock thermoform film, the leak resistant package consists of six perforated pockets enabling consumers to easily separate portions for meal preparation. Remaining portions can be refrigerated or frozen in the original package. There is no need to re-wrap the product, and its vacuum packaging protects the poultry from freezer burn. This feature makes the saddle pack ideal for small families and empty nesters. The package was developed in collaboration with poultry processor Gold Kist Inc.

This year’s judging for the WorldStar Awards took place in Poznan, Poland, on Nov. 21, 2006. The awards are sponsored by the World Packaging Organization. The winners were selected by a panel of judges consisting of representatives from the World Packaging Organization and the International Packaging Press Organization. The WorldStar Awards will be presented during a ceremony in Chicago on Tuesday, May 15, 2007.
