Cryovac® OS Systems Keep New Flexplay DVD "Oxygen Free" Until Package is Opened

DUNCAN, S.C. (June 18, 2003) - Cryovac® OS Systems prove that packaging can make all the difference. This proprietary oxygen scavenging technology, developed by Sealed Air, is the packaging used by Flexplay Technologies Inc. for the company’s upcoming introduction of its Flexplay-enabled DVD, which has a 48-hour viewing window that begins when the disc is removed from its package. Once exposed to air, an oxidation reaction begins that renders the Flexplay DVD unplayable after the specified viewing period elapses.

"We have been working with Flexplay Technologies Inc. for several years developing a specialized package," said Tom Kennedy, New Business Development Manager for OS Systems, Cryovac Food Packaging Division of Sealed Air.

The core technology of Cryovac® OS Systems is the proprietary polymer component that is a layer of the multi-layer films. The scavenger is part of the material and invisible to the naked eye, giving consumers a clear view of the product. Cryovac® OS Films do not require moisture to activate or sustain the scavenging process. Instead, the oxygen scavenging is initiated "on demand" -- with a patented ultraviolet light triggering process delivered by the Cryovac® Model 4100. The quality assurance component of Cryovac® OS Systems is the Scavenging Verification System (SVS). The SVS provides quick and easy verification that the OS Films have been properly triggered and are absorbing oxygen. The SVS decreases the amount of production time that elapses before the manufacturer obtains a confirmation that the oxygen scavenging system is working.

"Once exposed to air, the Flexplay DVD is designed to become unplayable after the pre-set viewing period elapses. We’re pleased to be working with Sealed Air because it has packaging technology advanced enough to meet our rigorous specifications," said Alan Blaustein, CEO, of Flexplay Technologies Inc.

Cryovac® OS Films can be used as the lidding on thermoformed packages or trays, and Horizontal Form/Fill/Seal (HFFS) or Vertical Form/Fill/Seal (VFFS) pouch applications. The films also can be printed in multiple colors to meet product-labeling needs. Originally developed to protect perishable foods, the technology behind Cryovac® OS Films can be adapted easily to preserve many oxygen sensitive non-food products like the Flexplay DVD.
